 "First impression" 2010-01-04
By Shelley Hamel
I just got my Makita last week after suffering for years with DeWalt and Ridgid. First impression is that it's 10 times easier to use than the Ridgid and collects more dust than the DeWalt. The Ridgid is an invention of the Devil. Almost impossible to hold on to. I didn't save the receipt for the Ridgid, can't return it, so this is my revenge.

 "So far, so good." 2009-07-07
By Richard S. Gargurevich (Georgetown, CA USA)
I have tried every orbital sander on the market, except Bosch. Every one I have bought so far has been made in China and has died in a few months. This one is made in China too, but is way quiter than the rest. We'll see how it holds up.

 "nice tool" 2009-04-08
By adjective (place)
Anyone familiar with power tools knows that Makita is one of the best power tool manufacturers. This sander is typical of the Makita brand: rugged and scrupulously attentive to ergonomic detail. I like the way the wire clamps hold onto the sandpaper and the tool's lack of vibration; you could use this thing all day without discomfort. Nice sander, and probably not my last Makita purchase.

 "Very pleased" 2009-02-17
By N. Osborne (Overland Park, KS)
I bought this sander to replace a Makita I have had since 1992. I was impressed with the improvements that have been made. There is much less hand vibration, it is easier to load the sandpaper and the dust catcher works better. I am sanding plaster repair. Although nothing will completely control plaster dust, this really helps to contain it in a more limited area. I like the Makita because it is light weight, easier for me to handle and still does a good job.

 "Nice glossy finish" 2008-01-25
By R. Lee
This polishing bonnet leaves a nice brilliant gloss. Best if used not to remove wax, but to polish after wax has been removed. For removing and applying wax use the sander/polishing bonnet which has a thicker wool lining.

"The worst bonnet I have ever bought. I will never buy any thing from this company again" 2007-03-08
By Barry Brodfuehrer
It's the worst ever I will never buy anything from this co again. It's not worth the .60 cents to send it back. It is a rip off.

"Great product, unfortunately it's wool" 2007-01-08
By Yankee Scholar (Edmond, OK United States)
I purchased this for my father who is a big car buff and has this model buffer. As it turns out, you get an awful finish from wool and should use foam instead. Ah, live and learn.

 "quality all the way" 2009-08-27
By looseknot (wi, usa)
Over the years I have come to expect only a quality product from Makita. This sander is no exception. Though not necessary, the rubber on the body and top does give a good grip, especially with fine sawdust on your hands. The 3amp motor has plenty of power and the pad continues to turn even under pressure (unlike the milwaukee). Lastly, the vibration level is very low which makes it nice if you are sanding a large piece or have to use the sander for a long period of time.

I was so pleased with this sander, I bought a second one and use it for fine grit sanding.

 "good soild tool" 2007-10-19
By Ron (Bainbridge Island)
I have had this for around a year now. It is a fine sander. I has the classic Makita feel- solid the only problem I have with it is the dust port is so small hooking up a vacuum is a hassle. other then that a well made quality tool.

"The best sander in it's class for the money" 2007-03-18
By T. Scales
I have several of Makitas Random orbit sanders and they just keep getting better! I have "Other" major brands ... none come close to the ease of operation and fast uniform removal of material. The Makita service center is always there with the correct part and on time when in need of a part. I use my sanders almost daily in my work so a good sander is mosst important to me. You can't go wrong with any Makita product!

 "nice, thick, buffing pad . . ." 2009-09-23
By trebe
This is a reasonably priced, good quality, seven inch diameter, wool buffing and polishing pad. It is pretty thick and deep, and has a 3/4 inch diameter hole in the middle. The pad is designed to be secured by the hook and loop system. `Hook and loop' is a generic term for Velcro type fastening. One advantage of hook and loop is that you can change pads quickly.

If you have concerns about the reliability of hook and loop, the system is reasonably secure. The `hooks' on your buffing wheel, need to be in good condition, and not damaged or bent up. The `loops' are the fuzzy part on the back of the pad. Push the pad and wheel together, and give them a little twist to make sure there is a good `bite'. Test run the buffer at low speed and see how it feels. If it seems secure, you can gradually increase the speed and pressure.

I use on fiberglass boats and my truck . I use two at a time to clean one and use the other. Have used these pads in the past , but others like them so much they seem to disappear

Good for applying and removing wax. It gets saturated after a while, so it's a good idea to have extra spares while waxing your car.

 "Setting this review straight!" 2009-12-30

By R. Joyner (AZ)

Bought this sander in a discount section of a big box store for $54.00(new). Some reviewers seem to have little or no understanding of the word value. I originally bought a belt sander for $100 bucks and a couple days later found this sander for almost half the price so I then returned the $100 sander. The other sander did have a slightly larger motor and had adjustable speeds but it was nearly TWICE the price of this makita! I would never compare the two as they are not "apples to apples" unlike many of the other novice users and reviewers here. With all that said, whether you paid a discount price like I did or bought it on amazon for around $65.00 this is a great VALUED sander. To the idiot that sent the review about the belts.....THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A REVIEW ABOUT THE SANDER!! Get different belts for the sander if you don't like them you tool! For the moron that complained about the belt grinding off the plastic........TRY READING THE DIRECTIONS! There is in fact a screw on the side to adjust your tracking so that the belt won't do that. Do us all a favor and take up sewing instead so we don't have to read your useless review.

I'm a hobbyist and part time family helping wood worker. For the guys like me who use a belt sander on an occasional scribe job or butcher block table top etc. this is perfect. Great tracking, good dust removal(better if you attach a vacuum), good weight, and can be laid on its back for sanding smaller pieces. If you are trying to sand 1500 sq. ft of flooring, YOU BOUGHT THE WRONG SANDER! Thank you to the rest of you reviewers who understand value and functionality.

 "Belts too weak" 2009-12-25

By Ike vanCruyningen (Silicon Valley, CA)

I've had a couple of these units, and both of them had the belt break after six to eight months of use. You can get a new belt for twelve bucks, and it isn't hard to put in, but after a couple belts you get frustrated and annoyed. Spend the bucks for a better quality unit.

 "This sander is fine!" 2009-12-15

By Justin Rainey (Nevada City, California)

I read some of the reviews stating how bad this sander was... do you know how cheap this is for a Makita Belt Sander? For $65 shipped to your door, you can't go wrong (that's what I paid on Amazon). Sure, it could be stronger, but why are you looking at the weakest model if you want a power house? Makita has tons of stronger sanders on Amazon - pay more and buy one of those. But for a small time contractor and normal jobs, this sander is great. I've always been happy with Makita.
