 "Much better than expected" 2009-10-16
By Harley Dixon (Henrietta, NY)
I had a heavy, old, half sheet Craftsman orbital sander that has served me very well over the years...it was hard to beat the job it was able to do, mainly because of it's weight, and the size of the sanding sheet it used. So when the gears in it finally gave up and it was unrepairable, I had to search for another to finish sanding the airplane I was building.

I searched the local stores for a large orbital sander but was unable to find any for less than $300. So, I tried a couple of smaller, lighter, brand name orbital sanders that I bought from the local Big Box stores, but they couldn't handle the size of the job...one of them broke the paper hold down mechanism, both of them too small, too light and too slow.

After a search online, I came across this Makita unit, and seeing the reviews on it on several other websites, and the price here on Amazon, I figured I'd give it a try.

What a difference! It did the job beautifully...fast, smooth and accurate. I have to admit that I did not use the filter or the vacuum cleaner attachment for a couple of reasons...in sanding a large object like the fuselage and wing strakes of my plane, the vacuum hose would get in the way, or the filter would fill up every five minutes with the primer and fiberglass dust I was removing. So, I sanded it outside and let the wind carry the dust away (sorry, neighbors ).

It surpassed my expectations, as I was able to finish my fuselage in less than three hours. Both the coarse and finish sanding! I had figured it was going to take me eight to ten hours, so I was way ahead.

Excellent product...the third Makita tool in my considerable collection of power tools (the other two Makitas are a saw and a drill)...and all three of them surpassed my expectations. Don't think I'll look at any other brand first for any future tools...or anywhere else but Amazon.com for the best prices!

 "Makita 1/2 sheet sander BO4900V" 2009-04-04
By HTB (Ohio)
I bought this sander off of EBAY and it is very very smooth. It is as smooth as a Porter Cable 505 sander. The punch plate you can get from makita is not worth the price and the holes it makes are to small. The sand paper is not to be found from Makita. As far as the dust port being to small for most hose connections all you need is the FEIN step adpt # 921072K13 about $7-9 bucks depending where you get it from. The multi speed is great. No need to buy the Festool sander it is not any better then this Makita sander and it cost much more. The Bosch 1/2 sheet sander is good but I did feel some vibration while using it so I sold it to get the this Makita, Best multi speed sander I have used. The Porter Cable 505 sander which I do own is just as good but no multi speed or dust collection and made in Mexico now. The Makita is made in Japan.

 "Good sander, almost great" 2008-02-21
By Matthew Murphy (Lafayette, Colorado)
I have been using the Metabo 1/2 sheet sander for years, and have a couple of them. I have always been very satisfied with them, but one day somebody dropped one off a ladder and offer to replace it. I had trouble finding the Metabo at a reasonable price, so I bought the new Makita. It is about as good as the Metabo in every regard except for the dust collection. Not having a punch plate does not bother me (I usually use a nail set,) but the dust port in the back is maybe a 1" pipe, and does not fit any standard dust collection vacuums (Fein, Porter Cable, Festool.) I've been told that I need to buy a special hose to tote around in order to attach to a vacuum, or maybe cob an adapter together out of vacuum parts. The reason I did not buy the Bosch (another good sander) was because I would have to buy an adaptor to make the rectangular exhaust round and able to hook up to dust collection. I figured that would get lost once or twice a year. Makita repeatedly says how easy it is to hook up to dust collection, but I fail to see that. The Metabo is expensive, but no adaptors are needed.

 "Don't buy this product." 2006-08-01
By M. K. Witter (California)
I have owned and used Craftsman and Milwaukee 1/2 sheet finishing sanders and liked them both. I bought the Makita and sent it back as being unacceptable for the following reasons:

1) In order to have the dust collector function, special Makita sand paper must be used or a special hole punching machine must be purchased in order to make the special sand paper required. 2) If standard paper is used, not only does the dust collector not work, but the many dust collecting holes in the pad do not support the paper, resulting in inefficient use of the paper.

"The best of the best sanders & Festool paper fits it too" 2005-10-28
By Woodsmithy (Green Bay, WI USA)
I have used the Makita Model 9046 1/2 sheet sander for 4 years. It is almost identical to this model.

I had the opportunity to do a hands on evaluation of 1/2 sheet sanders. I liked the ruggedness Porter-Cable, the economy of the Milwaukee, and the feel of the Bosch, but the Makita is in a class of it's own.

At first it seemed a little heavy, but after I got use to it and let it work, it did a fantastic job. This 1/2 sheet sander oscillates much more than the others and does the job in half the time. It leaves the surface dead flat and is very kind to veneer.

It has vacuum pich-up holes in the paper/sander like a random orbital sander. If you hook it up to a vac the dust is minimal ( This may require a little tape around the outlet to fit your hose). The punch plate does not come with the sander. So unless you can find the special pre-punched paper, you need to order the plate from a Makita rep or make one.

I do not recommend starting with 80 grit paper. This sander can be very aggressive, so start with the finest grit that will do job.

Added January 2009

The bad news is that I recently ran out of the pre-punched Makita sandpaper and my local shop stop carrying it. Sometimes when I'm working on a small project, it's really nice to have the pre-punch hook & loop paper for fast/easy grit changes. The good news is that I did some investigating and discovered that the Festool ½ sheet hook & loop is interchangeable with the Makita. Of course the Festool paper is no bargain but it works great on my Makita sander and the dust control is awesome.

Eight years of intermittent use and it still runs great.

 "Fantastic Sander!" 2008-03-08
By E. Gossert (Arizona)
I was looking for a small random orbit sander that could be used in the house. This one is great! The dust collection works excellent, it is fairly quiet and has very little vibration. It is comfortable in the hand, so it can be used for quite a while without any hand fatigue. On the small project I used it on, the sanded surface was nice and smooth & ready for finishing. This is going to be a joy to use for years to come!

 "Excellent Reliable Sander" 2007-11-08
By D. Adams (CA, USA)
I bought this sander back in 2004 and it is still going strong. I do have a couple of other sanders including a Festool sander, but I find myself coming back to this Makita every time. The handle holds well in my hand, the switch is conveniently placed, and it is well balanced. I find the variable speed feature very handy for different applications.

I would have to agree with the other reviewers who mention the dust bag could be better. The dust on mine tended to leak out at a couple of stitches where the bag met the plastic connection, but I solved it by just putting tape over that section. If you hook the sander up to a dust collector/shop vac, this problem is eliminated.

I would highly recommend this particular Makita BO5012K model and would definitely purchase again if, knock on wood, needed to.

 "Control" 2007-10-27
By P. Plumb
I build cabinets and do high-end trim work. For my business, control and true random scratch pattern are the most important attributes - much of what I do is feathering-type work. I had not used the Makita but I purchased it based on a review I saw that rated it highly in the categories that are important to me.

I had used Porter-Cable five hole sanders for many years. When one recently went down, I took the opportunity to try the Makita. There is no contest when it comes to control - the Porter-Cable wins hands down. By comparison the Makita is like having a gyro in your hand and it's a good deal better than others I have used. The Makita seems more efficient than the Porter-Cable so I think I'll get use out of it on broad expanse flat work but I've ordered parts for the down Porter-Cable and will be returning it to action soon.

When it comes to scratch pattern, the only true test is whether scratches show up when wood is stained. I assume the Makita will do well but I have no feedback at this time. I have never had a problem with the Porter-Cables.

The Makita is a good tool - just not as good for most of MY applications.

The buffer really worked great when I finally got to use it. It did not come as advertized with the hook and loop backing pad. After contacting Makita and getting no where, Amazon agreed to send me another buffer. Unfortunately for me, it too came packaged incorrectly. So, after some discussion Amazon agreed to credit my account the amount of money necessary to buy the backing pad.

"Makita 4x24 VS belt sander" 2007-09-10
By J. Reyman
This unit is relatively quiet, and thanks to makita's efficient and powerful motors acts stronger than its amperage rating. Belts change quickly and easily, and variable speed control lets you select the best speed for the job. Another great feature is the 16' cord, allowing for maneuverability not found in most corded powertools. The dust bag is also removable. Works great. If you don't buy this, a Bosch should be your next choice.

Purchased this sander from Toolbarn after suffering with my old Dewalt DW433. The saw was delivered in a three days in excellent condition. This sander sounds ten times quieter than the Dewalt it replaced. Smoooth and powerfull. Excellent dust collection. Best belt sander I've every used - including several Porter Cables, which are much hearview and noisier.

 "Not as Cracked UP" 2006-07-08
By M. Schiller
This sander is clearly meant for a left handed operator. The support inside the dust bag is in the way for a right handed person. I had the misfortune of buying this reconditioned from Makita and honestly it looks more Used than reconditioned. Twice before I have bought Reconditioned tools from DeWalt and they both were delivered as practically brand new. Not so with this Makita. I believe that I may return it and go for the Porter Cable. Even though the PC is heavier the ergonomics seem better for me.

 "Wonderful sander" 2004-08-31
By Jim (Virginia)
Nice and light, and the 4" width is great for leveling 4" wide lumber. Dust collection is better than average. I love the belt tracking adjustment and the variable speed. Slow speed is almost like hand blocking, high speed really takes off lots of material. I've had it about a year now. The other 4 X 24 belt sander that I have used is the Porter Cable 362, but it weighs 20 pounds and it's like sanding with a Buick. Don't even think about using the Porter Cable on a vertical surface. The makita weighs about 8 pounds I think. Only improvement would be to include a case, but none of the belt sanders that I looked at had a case. The 9404 is hard to find in stores, I had to order it from Tool Crib. You won't be dissapointed. If you want a really light and mobile sander, the 5 pound Makita 9911 can't be beat, but it uses 3X18 belts and I like the 4" width. Makita belt sanders seem quieter than most.

 "EXPENSIVE to maintain" 2010-02-18
By truckerdan
Bought this sander because of some tests I read in woodworking magazines. It worked really well for a while. Just used it lightly in a hobby shop. Soon I noticed the hook and loop sandpaper began working off the pad long before the grit was excessively worn. Had to put everything in storage a few years. Now the foam in the sander pad has disintegrated. No big deal-at least until I find out a new pad cost 24 bucks plus shipping. What a rip off!!! I am supposed to keep replacing pads at that price so some executive can have a multimillion dollar salary? I think not!!

I've been using the Makita BO5021 sander for about two years and I am completely satisfied with the tool.

I removed the dust bag and adapter so that I can hook my Fein vacuum (via a Fein adapter) to the sander and it collects 95% of the dust. The sanding disks are available almost everywhere (I use the Mirka Gold disks). The sander works smoothly with very little vibration and has plenty of power.
