 "not that great" 2009-12-25

This is my second Makita 3" belt sander and I must say this one is not near as good as the first. It's underpowered.

"Rugged and reliable but not all that pretty" 2009-04-24
By Cousin Vinny (Scottsdale, AZ United States)
I have several belt sanders, each for a different purpose. This Makita variable speed model is, by far, my favorite to use, especially for long periods of time. Generally, I use it at #3 or #4 speed setting so as to maximize control, minimize runaway, preserve belt life, reduce clogging and minimize heat buildup. If it's warranted, I'll crank it up for short periods of sanding or stock removal.

Using a belt sander properly requires a different approach, better technique and a pay-close-attention-to-what-you're-doing mindset than does a random orbit or palm sander. Carelessness with any belt sander can quickly ruin a project by removing too much material, cupping, gouging, etc.

The belt on this model tracks true and the sander doesn't flip it off after continuous use, such as when the rollers and belt heat up in operation. It is NOT a very quiet sander but it is powerful and quite durable and easy to control in operation, even one-handed.

The dust port becomes increasingly less effective as the sander is used, despite frequent emptying of the bag and blowing all clear with compressed air. Sawdust can build up quickly around the belt which in turn can get underneath and clog the belt's grit. To remedy this, I fashioned a hose adapter so that I could hook it up to my shop vacuum and sanding dust on the surface has been greatly reduced.

Its compactness makes it easy to use on the vertical and less tiring to use overall. The 3x18 belts for it are relatively inexpensive and readily available in home centers, paint and hardware stores.

If you can afford only one belt sander and would like to use it on a variety of projects and with different results in mind, including paint removal and smoothing of very rough wood such as cedar slats, then buying this one is a wise choice. It's not the best belt sander out there BUT it's exceptionally good, rugged, balanced and reliable. And, for $149, it's still a decent bargain.

"Do not buy this belt sander" 2009-02-08
By J. E. Baxter (Nashville, TN)
I just purchased this today to scribe a countertop. Didn't want to spend close to $200 on a really good belt sander so I got this one from a pawn shop for about $60. It appeared to work fine as I initially plugged it up, flipped it over and turned it on. The belt seemed to turn with no variance so I did nothing to adjust it. I began to work on scribing my countertop and got about 3/4s of the way done when I began to smell something hot or burning. I stopped the sander, noticed that the belt had slipped over into the plastic casing and begun to cut into it. Now I have an unfinished scribing project and a waste of $60. Guess I learned my lesson. I should have gotten the best the first time. Wish I had read these reviews before buying this product. Please heed my advice and DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT.

 "Mini but mighty." 2008-08-24
By J. Hruby (St. Paul, MN)
If you're after a compact belt sander with plenty of power and features, this Makita is first class.

If you've used belt sanders before, you understand the need for a compact sander for jobs like scribing countertops and for sanding verticle surfaces.

As usual with my power tools, I bought the Makita 9911 and gave it a gentle break-in. I took it out of the box, changed belts to a coarse, and then ran it for over an hour without shutting it off while sanding the hull of a wooden boat. Then I continued to give it about 3 additional hours of use and that was just its first day. The Makita is excellent, the best small belt sander I've ever used.

The positives:

- Light weight, but very powerful. This is the best sander in the world if you have to sand vertical surfaces! It's light, but on high speed it really sands fast. Now if you've tried to use heavy belt sanders to sand vertical, you know how nice it is to have a light, but powerful sander.

- Good dust collection. The dust system actually works on this sander and works very well. I haven't felt the need to hook it up to my vac system because the dust collection is that good.

- It's actually fairly quiet for a belt sander. I still wear hearing protection, but it's noticeably quieter than the turbo-jet scream that most belt sanders emit.

- I experienced no tracking issues at all. Put on a belt, adjust the tracking screw, and it stays right where I set it.

The not-so-good:

-I had to take a utility knife and remove the sharp plastic molding edge on the underside of the handle. Details, guys, please! A minor detail, but annoying and I'd expect Makita to catch things like this.

- The closure on the dust bag is a funny plastic thing that slides on and I can already see I'll have to be careful not to lose it. What's wrong with a zipper like everyone else uses?

But still I give it 5 stars because it works very well and has great features. As always, I'll edit my review if problems develop.

 "When a ROS Isn't Quite Enough" 2007-11-28
By John T. Horner (Morgan Hill, CA USA)
I recently picked this up for $79 on clearance at The Borg and am thrilled with it. I already have a large heavy duty belt sander, but I rarely use the monster because it is so aggressive and heavy. However, there are times when a random orbit sander is just too slow for the job at hand. With this little Makita I have excellent control and reasonably aggressive removal rates. Mine was Made in England, though I'm not sure if they all are. The belt tracking is automatic. Just slip the belt on and go. The balance is just right. A very nicely engineered tool which I'm glad to have in the collection.

 "Amazon good...Makita bad." 2006-08-14

The buffer really worked great when I finally got to use it. It did not come as advertized with the hook and loop backing pad. After contacting Makita and getting no where, Amazon agreed to send me another buffer. Unfortunately for me, it too came packaged incorrectly. So, after some discussion Amazon agreed to credit my account the amount of money necessary to buy the backing pad.

"Thrilled with this sander! Amazing dust collection!" 2009-09-20
By Friend (Wisconsin)
I needed to resurface a cupped and warped porch deck, a bigger job than my PC rotary sander could handle. I decided on this sander. I initially bought a Ryobi from Home Depot figuring I wouldn't need to use it a lot, but then returned it unopened after I pictured myself using a broken down crappy tool in a couple years. After reading many reviews I decided on this sander. I am really happy I paid $[...] bucks more for a much higher quality tool. Tracking is perfect. Power is very good. DUST COLLECTION IS UNBELIEVABLE! After a few minutes on the porch I realized there wasn't any sawdust, yet the paint was coming up. A few more minutes and I checked the bag...the bag was nearly half full! It captured almost everything! I love this sander! This is one of those tools that you will be happy you spent a little more money on and you will use for many years to come.

 "perfect belt sander" 2009-08-21
By J. Perry
I have owned this sander for a few months. Bought it for remodeling work I'm doing to my house but I also have a little work shop where I make boxes and some furniture. This sander has pretty well taken up residence in one of my wood vise. I use it alot in my shop. The belts stay on track and variable speed is really nice. I have a large 6X24 belt sander but it really doesn't get any attention anymore. I would recommend one of these in place of a stationary sander as it is so versatile.

I purchased the Makita 9903 belt sander to remove paint from my home that I am repainting. I am totally happy with my purchase. The variable speed control and the belt tracking are perfect. I had an old Sears belt sander that doesn't compare to the Makita.

 "Pretty good" 2009-03-28
By orangekay (San Francisco, CA United States)
This sander has plenty of power for its size, and the vacuum bag actually sucks up quite a bit of the dust without spraying it right back in your face. Tracking is decent and the fact that the right side and top are flat and ready to be clamped down to any available surface makes it great for occasional bench sanding.

What I don't like is how off-balance it is--it really likes to roll toward the left on account of the motor's weight and it's pretty hard to tell whether or not you're holding it level until it's too late. Compound this problem with the fact that the optional sanding shoe/frame is both $114 extra AND discontinued and you've got some pretty heavy cons. I made my own frame out of 3/4" MDF, but it's obviously pretty heavy and not especially durable.

I also have a problem with the placement of the speed adjustment knob--it gets coated in dust almost instantly and becomes impossible to read without a shot of compressed air. I worry about how long it will last before the potentiometer fizzles out.

There seem to be an awful lot of reviews of belt sanders from all manufacturers where customers complain about Amazon shipping them a used unit as new. I too suspected this had happened to me upon opening the box as mine was covered in what appeared to be sawdust. A closer inspection however revealed that this was in fact just cardboard that had gotten sanded by the belt as the unit was thrown around during shipping. No harm, no foul.

If you plan on doing a lot of leveling, I'd consider the DeWalt as you can pick up their frame just about anywhere. Otherwise, there's quite a bit of bang for your buck here. It looks boxy and awkward, but those bad looks really add to the versatility of the machine.

UPDATE: Just talked to Makita on the phone and they confirmed that the sanding shoe accessory is no longer being made by anyone and they have no plans to design or produce a replacement model. Boo.

"Ordered a new one, amazon shipped it used" 2009-01-30

Looked like a good product, but was clearly used and the belt was worn so I returned it. Amazon won't let you exchange this product, so I ordered another. If it is used as well, I'll be dissapointed. So far I've ordered 3 powertools on Amazon and all have been clearly used, and some missing parts. I'm giving them one last shot. Beware.

 "great sander" 2009-10-01
By R. Hellmer (Topeka, USA)
I have had this sander for about 2 years and love it. I've used PC, DW and Makita 1/4 sheet finish sanders for years now and finally stepped up to a 1/3 sheet. The difference is amazing. Vibration on this is negligible and it is quite, smooth and powerful. Dust collection is surprisingly effective, although not perfect and the included punch plate is simple but effective. I would say that this sander performs much closer to a good half-sheet at 1/3 the cost. And I'm comparing this to my dad's Milwaukee 1/2 sheet (which is amazing, but expensive). If you are sanding panels all day, go for the half sheet but for the home shop or even small industrial I would say this sander is a great investment. For just a little more than a 1/4 sheet sander, you get way more sander, I'd say more than you pay for.

 "Expected More From Makita" 2007-10-09
By Jack
This is my second 1/3 sheet Makita sander. My first is still running but the pad wore out and a replacement pad cost $40 so I decided to buy this new one. My biggest disappointment was how easy it is to accidentally hit the button and turn it off while working, yet it can also be difficult to get it to pop in and stay on. Both of these problems would have been avoided with a switch instead of a button. The levers for attaching the paper are also very heavy duty and require a lot of pressure to open. Otherwise it seems to work very much like my first one than ran for many years, over thousands of feet of wood.

 "Great hand sander" 2007-03-08
By Carl B (Arvada, CO)
1/3-sheet sanders are becoming scarce, but this one is clearly the best of the lot. I had a Black & Decker before, but it finally died after over 15 years of service. I don't know if this Makita will last that long. But, while it lasts, it is so much quieter and more efficient at sanding that I could never go back to a B&D. The dust collecting bag works well and the unit doesn't leave your hand vibrating after you use it (the B&D's do).
